2002 Christmas Card Poem
by Jeanne Hughes
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Park
the cry of a bear cub could be heard
in the dark.
The fox said to his neighbor the deer,
“Do you suppose the cub has something
to fear?”
The wolf told the fox and the fox told the raven
that the bear lost a leg before he came
to this haven
He was found by a couple in a small mountain town
who tried to get help and at each path
was turned down
They brought him to Big Bear to Dr. Hovik, who saw at a glance
That saving this cub was just a mere
chance
The vet and his helpers worked all day on the bear
their deeds went rewarded as well as
their care
The barely survived cub was transferred to the zoo
where the curator and helpers knew what
to do.
His name is Hucklebeary.

The bison told the others, we’ll welcome this cub with three cheers
and tell him he’s not alone and hope
that he hears.
Yes, that brave cub survived, the raven told the possum
and at Moonridge Animal Park he is
bound to blossom
Into a bear much like his brothers, Tacoma, Seattle or Zuni
our resident bears who told their
Christmas wishes to me
For Christmas the bears are wishing for a new home in the Valley
one where all wildlife in the zoo
can live by golly
For the rest of their lives, they’ll be secure on this hill
and happy forever that there’s peace
and goodwill
You folks out there know we cannot fend for ourselves in the wild
and for the rest of our lives we’ll
be handled much like a child
We wish lots of support for the Friends of the Zoo
in the form of donations because
they always come through
Please give what you can, the amount doesn’t matter
we appreciate whatever is put on
the platter
May the season bring peace and joy to all of you
and do remember the wildlife at Moonridge
zoo.
